Hard work required to avoid Scottish public sector job cuts
9th March 2011
Scottish councils have been working hard to reduce their budgets for the forthcoming year in response to cuts of 2.6% in Scottish government funding. Despite the cuts, every council in Scotland has pledged not to increase the rate of council tax for their residents.
With a reduction in the amount of income many people will receive, there are also fears that jobs will be lost, including those of employees who currently provide extremely important debt advice services to those suffering from financial shortcomings.
There has been hard work going on in the background to ensure no public sector redundancies will have to be made. Ministers, the councils themselves and trade unions have all been working on a deal to make this a possibility. In return for the lack of compulsory redundancies, unions are being asked to support flexibility on working practices, which will help councils make further savings down the line.
If such a deal does become a reality, it will come as a huge relief to public sector workers. We recently revealed that many such workers have been working substantial unpaid overtime in a desperate bid to protect their jobs.
For those individuals in the public sector who are currently exposed to a significant level of consumer debt, the threat of redundancy will come with markedly more severe consequences any period of unemployment, which may be followed to a return to the workplace but at a reduced salary, would force many people to consider a debt resolution option such as a trust deed.
Pay freezes and increased flexibility will come at a cost to those workers in the public sector. For many however, the achievement of a deal which ensures their continued employment will come as a huge relief and comfort to all.
